Significance - disambiguation
"Significance" has two main meanings, especially in psychology and the social sciences. When used without any qualification, it is normally understood as referring to the statistical probability of the results. Qualified as 'practical' significance, it refers to the importance or relevance of the results beyond or despise their statistical significance and its usually portrayed as synonymous of 'effect size'. However, 'practical significance' can be further extended to include an assessment of the results based on reasonable grounds (eg, including the context of interpretation).
The table below summarises the different uses of significance, and gives recommendations for sorting out potential confusion.
|statistical significance||the probability of the results||(statistical) significance|
|practical significance||the magnitude of the results||effect size|
|practical significance||the importance or relevance of the results||importance, relevance|
